Electrical Machines

Electrical Machine

                     An electrical machine is a device which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy or vice versaElectrical machines include Generator,Motor and Transformer.

Generator :

         A generator is an electrical machine which converts mechanical energy of energy into electrical work . Generators have generally two basic parts named "Stator" and "Rotor".Mechanical energy is provided to the rotor of a generator by means of a prime mover. Generators are classified into two types AC and DC generators.

Motor :

              A motor is an electrical machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
When a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, the conductor experiences a mechanical force and this is the principle of motor. Motors are also classified into AC and DC .

Transformers:

               Transformers do not actually make conversion between mechanical and electrical form. but they transfer electric power from one circuit to another circuitThey can decrease or increase the voltage while transferring the power without changing the frequency.

Induction Motor

                             Induction Motors are the most commonly used motors in many applications. These are also called as Asynchronous Motors, because an induction motor always runs at a speed lower than synchronous speed.

Induction motor is a type of AC motor ,basically 2 types of induction motor depending upon the type of input supply -
(i)  Single phase induction motor
                                            Or they can be divided according to type of rotor -
 (i)  Squirrel cage motor
 (ii) Slip ring motor or wound type

Synchronous Speed:

                The rotational speed of the rotating magnetic field is called as synchronous speed.

                                                     Ns = 120f/P

                                                                               Where, f = frequency of the spply

Slip :

  The difference between the synchronous speed (Ns) and actual speed  (N) of the rotor is called as slip .
                                 slip in induction motor
                                                                                P = number of poles

Electrical Transformer

                    Electrical transformer is a static electrical machine which transforms electrical power from one circuit to another circuit, without changing the frequency.

Working Principle Of Transformer:

                     The basic principle behind working of a transformer is the phenomenon of mutual induction between two winding linked by common magnetic flux.Basically a transformer consists of two inductive coils; primary winding and secondary winding. The coils are electrically separated but magnetically linked to each other.The figure below shows the simplest form of a transformer.
